Dream JobsDream Jobs are still out there to be had, even in a down economy. They are just fewer in number, and there are more applicants for them. But dream jobs still exist! So how do you land one of those dream jobs?

Today, I’d like to give you some tips on how to get one of those dream jobs. This is probably advice that you’ve never heard before, because most job experts don’t have much experience in hiring people. And you have to think about things from the perspective of the employer if you want to land your dream job.

What is a Dream Job? What Are Its Qualities?

First, we have to start at the beginning. What really is a dream job? Have you given much thought to that? What are the qualities of a dream job?

When most people think of a dream job, they think of specific occupations. For example, I’d like to be “King,” where I have lots of servants around me at my beck and call. Or I’d like to do one of those travel jobs where you document your trips to exotic places around the world, where you eat scrumptious food, and stay in the most luxurious resorts. Plus, you get paid for it.

What is the quality that runs through these dream jobs that makes them appealing?

“Servants.”

Having people under you to carry out your instructions and to make your life easier is probably the most appealing qualities of having a dream job. I totally get this. I think I’m this way myself.

What other qualities make up a dream job?

I think a lot of people, me included, would like to have a job with little or no responsibilities. Imagine getting paid to do nothing important? Would that be cool, or what?

Third, how about a job that you love doing? Maybe being a professional athlete where you get to play all day long. Or how about an archaeologist, working to unearth the past in some remote part of the world. Fun stuff that you wouldn’t mind doing, even if you didn’t get paid for it. After all, isn’t that God’s desire for you for you to enjoy your work?

“So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot.” Ecclesiastes 3:22 (NIV)

How about adoring fans that love you? Would that make for a dream job? Maybe you might become an actor/actress that has as talent agent to take care of all the little nuisances of life so you can focus on being famous.

If not adoring fans, at least you want to be around fun and happy people, right? You could have a perfect job, but it can quickly turn into a nightmare if you are surrounded by dower folks that make your life miserable with their crummy attitudes.

I’ve had several dream jobs in my life. These are jobs that a lot of other people have said to me that they wished the had. They were envious of me that I had the job, and that envy often reared its ugly head, and then the dream job downgraded itself into just a “job.”

The point of all this is that before you can start looking for a dream job, you have to describe the qualities and characteristics that make one. You might want to sit down after reading this, and jot down all the qualities that make up a dream job for you.

What Are The Dream Job’s Responsibilities?

Now make a list of the responsibilities of your dream job? What will you have to do? What will you have to accomplish?

This is really where the rubber meets the road. While we would love to have a job without responsibilities, in reality, this is the only thing the employer is hiring you for. What problem do they need you to solve for them?

The key point in life is this: “You will only be paid for the problems you solve for another person.”

If your idea of a dream job does not solve a problem for the employer, then you will never get it. You’ll be on government assistance until you run out of those benefits too.

To land the dream job, most prospects look at the “qualifications.” They look to see what kind of education that is required, or what kind of experience they had to have in the past. But do you understand why these qualifications are even listed? They are there because the employer is trying to narrow down the pool of prospects to find the one person that can “solve the problem” that they have. The qualifications are only based on their experiences as to what kind of person they think is able to solve the problem.

The job prospect that understands that the employer is trying to solve a problem, not just trying to fill an empty chair in the office, really has an advantage over the other prospects.

This is so important that it is worth repeating.

As a job prospect, you must totally come to grips with the fact that the employer is looking to find a person that will solve a problem for them. PERIOD!

They are not looking for warm bodies. They are not looking for a person to be a “security guard,” for example. The problem they are trying to solve is preventing theft and to catch the criminals that do steal or cause harm. And they want the person to come in and fix the problem permanently so that it doesn’t crop up ever again. In other words, they don’t want a guard on their payroll forever, they want the person they hire to fix the problem so that the guard position can be eliminated permanently.

Your task, as a prospect looking to land that dream job, is to understand that the employer doesn’t want you around forever. They want you to come in, fix the problem, and then to look for another problem to fix within the company. Your attitude should be to work yourself out of the job. Just like a consultant. Come in, do the job, and get out.

If you can fix more than one problem after the first one has been solved, they will know that you are the right person for their company.

Why Even Hire Employees?

Ask yourself this question. Why does a small-business owner hire that very first employee? What is the one basic problem that all business owners are trying to solve?

I’ll just come out and tell you the answer, so you’ll know how to present yourself when you are interviewing for that dream job.

There is one thing that everyone lacks. That is an infinite amount of time. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, years. You get the picture, right?

A business owner knows he does not have enough time in his day to get everything done. So he starts looking for a person to take some of the burdens off his shoulders, so that it frees up some of his time to be able to do other projects that would move him closer to his goals.

Employers are reluctant to hire employees, because if they don’t find the person that understands why they are there (“to free up time for the owner”), then the owner will have to step in and do the job themselves.

Here is the golden key to this entire article: “The employer (business owner) is looking to hire a true “servant.”

That is why I prefaced this article with a series of posts about how servanthood is the key to getting what you want in life. It really is.

The business owner is a servant to his customers. The employees are to be a servant to the owner. If they aren’t, they are of no use to the owner, and he’ll continue to look for a person that is willing to be his servant. Again, he’s looking for a servant that will fix his problems, and free up his time so that he can move forward to his own goals.

Let this ruminate in your head for now. Understand the importance of how being a “servant” is important to the owner of the company, and what it would mean to him to have people with a servant’s attitude to work for him. When you understand that servanthood is an attitude, then you’ll realize why personality tests exist, and why you’re forced to take them as part of the interview process. Their sole purpose is to find out what your real attitude is. Are you really willing to be a servant?

Servanthood, because it is at the core of being fruitful to another person, is at the core of making money – God’s way.

    Hi Tim,

    What an excellent point. Because I am a sales and marketing person at heart, I am actually fairly skilled in crafting and writing resumes. A well-crafted resume is, essentially, marketing copy, selling YOU to a potential employer. With the current state of the economy even people with jobs are feeling insecure and know to keep their resumes current and to be ever looking on at least a low key level.

    Additionally, as they have been pursuing advanced degrees, a few friends are looking to make some career changes.

    This very excellent point which you make about how to be hired and to be desirable to an employer we need to aim for solving a problem for them. Many people make the resume error of citing what THEY want in their resume objective.

    Well, who cares?

    What a potential employer wants to know is not what TASKS you want to do for them but what problems will you solve, what accomplishments will you provide to them to contribute to their bottom line.
