Someone is always looking at your fingernailsThere is always someone watching you. In this article, we’ll talk about this, and how it relates to making money online. In fact, it is just as important in the brick-and-mortar world too. This morning, I was reading a blog by Scott Bell over at his blog site. The article was interesting, because he mentioned something important. When you first meet a woman, she instinctively looks at your fingernails and the shoes you wear.

Shoes are important to woman, as you can tell by the number of shoes in your closet. But I don’t quite understand the fingernail bit. Oh well…

The point you have to keep in mind is that you can only get promoted by someone that is higher up than you. You’re smart enough to realize, when you’re making money online, is that you’re customers are the ones that are “over you.” And they won’t spend money with you until they know that they’ll get more back from you than the money than they brought to the transaction.

There are many stories in the bible that illustrate this concept. But one that is in my mind right now is a story about a girl named Rebekah (Genesis chapter 24).

Although Rebekah didn’t know it, the stranger that just rode into her town was looking for a specific type of girl. He was the original Millionaire matchmaker, and he was on a mission to find someone worthy of becoming the wife of his millionaire client.

When he spotted Rebekah, she was busily working, fetching water from a spring to take back home. He approached the woman, and asked her for a drink of water from her pitcher that she just filled. As beautiful as she appeared, her attitude of servanthood was the real quality he was looking for, and it quickly became apparent. Not only did she give him a drink, she also offered to take care of his traveling companions and water the 10 camels that they rode in on.

There was no offer of payment for the task of watering the camels. She just offered because that was the nature of her character. It was the right thing to do.

Camels can drink a lot of waterNow watering 10 camels, one bucket at a time is something that takes a long while. Each animal can drink 20 to 40 gallons of water. It was going to take her well over an hour to lug up out of the spring somewhere between 200 and 400 gallons of water.

The amazing thing was that this girl “ran” to do the job. Ran! Did you get that? She ran while doing this laborious task.

The matchmaker was so stunned, that they just sat there and watched in awe. This woman was a real prize. In fact, when the time for negotiations to occur, he basically dropped all resistance and offered whatever the family wanted.

I guarantee that it will be the same with your customers. They are watching your every action at this very second, and are looking to see how you conduct business. They are saying to themselves, “can we trust this merchant is the one to satisfy our desires?” One way they will know you’re a prize is your level of servanthood and your eagerness to solve their problems.

If you can demonstrate to them that you can solve their problems, then you will get the sale. In fact, if you demonstrate that you understand their needs before they even ask you questions, all resistance to you as a salesman will drop. You can probably name any price, and they’ll be happy to pay it.

How do you know what your customers want? That is a great question. There are basically 16 needs and desires that all humans have, no matter where they are from. And it is easy once you know them to spot the ones that the customer is craving for you to solve. If you want to learn more about how to infer which desire a customer has at any given moment, then I highly recommend the program called Covert Hypnosis CD Course. It will revolutionize your selling career, and your life. It has worked wonders for my own sales career, as it makes you recognize the desires of your customers before they even ask you questions.

I read an article recently that was asking Ivanka Trump (Donald Trump’s daughter) about her secrets in business. Her response? Take the nasty, unpleasant jobs that no one wants. That is the way to move ahead. I think a large part of that is that someone will (hopefully) be watching you, and recognize that you are willing to do the dirty work. People always want the “fun” job; but someone has to take out the trash or scrub the floors. You may run the best business in the world, but if a customer walks through the door and the trash bins are overflowing, and the floor is sticky, they will walk right back out.
I like to think I am a person that will do the dirty work, and I know that people sometimes recognize that.

It is impressive when I get real great customer service and I do remember it. There is a restaurant in Lyon France that I will always go to when I’m in the city. My wife and I were living in France for over a year and had generally good experiences with customer service until we went to a restaurant and got the quintessential stereotypical rude French waitress. After sitting for 15 min with no sign of a server we thought she did not notice we were there so my wife got up and asked for a menu only to get her head chewed off. We waited for a few moments more and then decided this is ridiculous, there are restaurants all down this street, in fact we could nearly reach the table at the other restaurant across the street. So we got up and went there.

The waiter greeted us very friendly like and gave us menus. At the time we were fairly strict vegetarians and asked what he could do for us. He went on and on about changes he could do to this dish or that dish, he was so gracious and accommodating. We had a really great meal and a great experience and we always go to that restaurant when we are in Lyon because of his memorable customer service.

Shane is right. Truly exceptional service is so rare that it gets our loyalty. For me it is Neiman Marcus. When I dropped in t o their cafe in Chicago, hot and tired after shopping, the waitress asked what she could bring me. I said I needed a minute. She said “Perhaps I will bring you a bit of hot broth to restore you while you wait?”
They also serve cold beverages in the waiting rooms, tailor your clothes to fit, and deliver them so you don’t drag the packages around. I used to take my mother shopping their inher wheel chair and they were the ONLY retailer to be kind to her.
If we can convey a BIT of that online ,we are golden.

One of the best things I was taught while at the Naval Academy was that, “The walls have ears and eyes Mr. Chambers.” Always remmber that you are being observed and judged and act accordingly.

Remember that people observe you while looking for reasons NOT to do business with you, which explains the fingernail bit.

I am on board with Shane and the others…Great service is gone for the most part today. The US economy is more and more geared twards service..and yet its lacking.

Rebekah is a great role model of service with a smile! And so is the faithful servant who travelled all that way to find her.

Both thought of the client’s needs and sought to give him the best solution that would make his, and his son’s, dreams come true.

But what qualities do such models of service need to have to be able to respond with such selfless dedication to fulfilling their client’s needs?

That is a great story in the Bible and their are many more. Someone is always watching and deciding if you are the person or busines they want to associate with. The story of Rebekha is she treated everyone the same with the concern and enthusastic service

I’m a fan of giving more than the customer expects. Many times my clients will get 1 hour and 15 minutes of my time rather than 45 minutes to an hour. My clients would not get this kind of consideration in a gym. Plus they are looking at me to be a role model, which I try to be.

People tend to forget that no matter where you are people are always watching you and your appearance and how people see and perceive you is everything. Great great article and passage from the bible!

So true about the fingernails more so than the shoes for me. I look at a man’s fingernails to see if he bites them off (yuck) or trims them (preferable). Or, maybe he doesn’t trim them at all and they are long and jagged from breaking off (totally gross). If they are neatly trimmed I can converse without a problem, anything other than neatly trimmed and I can’t seem to think about anything other than his hands and how I hope I don’t even have to shake them!

What an expansion. That woman put in so much work, and thousands of years later it still shows. How much water would fit in such a bucket, measured in the American measure of gallons?
